At MODX Cloud, we’re always working to make your hosting faster, more secure, and easier to manage. Here’s what’s new since our last update:
🎉 WordPress Clouds Are Back – Beta Testers Wanted!
WordPress powers about 43% of the web, and after a long hiatus, we’re making it easier than ever to run WP in MODX Cloud. Now, you can install and manage WordPress just as easily as MODX Revolution—right from your Dashboard. That means:
- One-click installs and upgrades
- Restorable backups for peace of mind
- Seamless WP Admin user creation
And here’s the best part: we’ve yet to find a WordPress site that doesn’t run faster on our ultra-optimized PHP stack. Before we roll this out to everyone, we’re looking for beta testers to help us fine-tune the experience. Want in? Request your spot here.
✅ Backstage Gets Even Better
Since launching Backstage, our selective content staging tool, customers have raved about how it changes the way they manage their sites. Now, it’s even more powerful:
- Arbitrary Files: Adding individual files on the filesystem for promotion via Backstage
- Improved UX: Streamlined the UI to improve overall usability
- Better file handling: Add individual files for promotion without extra steps
- Added Support for Extras: If you install an Extra on staging, you can now push that to your production site

🔒 Smarter Security & Stability with Bot Protection
The internet is full of scrapers, AI indexers, and bad actors trying to slow down your site. We’re not having it.
Our platform-wide bot protection automatically detects and blocks aggressive, non-human traffic—without you lifting a finger. This has already reduced unwanted traffic bursts and improved platform stability across all sites.
Want even more security? Cloud Edge plus our new failover service keeps your site online, even when things go sideways.
⚡ Failover for Maximum Uptime
Downtime is never an option. That’s why we’ve introduced Failover for MODX Cloud, ensuring your sites stay online even in the face of unexpected issues. Our new failover service works seamlessly with Cloud Edge, automatically redirecting traffic to a backup server when your primary instance is unreachable.
- Automatic detection & response
- No manual intervention needed
Seamless fallback
- Users experience little to no disruption with failovers happening within a couple of minutes
- Works with Cloud Edge Faster sites with the Cloud Edge CDN
If uptime is critical for your business, this feature ensures your visitors never hit a dead end. Want to enable failover for your sites? Add it from your Cloud details view on the Upgrades tab.
🔄 Account Name Changes Now Available
Rebranding? Merging accounts? Need to update your account code? Now, you can request an account name change via our support team—especially useful for digital agencies managing multiple clients.
🏗️ Manager Isolation for More Reliable Admin Access
If your site gets hit with a surge of traffic or an issue that causes 502/504 errors, Manager Isolation can save the day. You can now enable an isolated PHP worker pool for your MODX Manager, ensuring you always have access to your admin panel.
👉 Enable it in Dashboard → Web Server tab → Cloud Edit View … for no extra charge.
🗑️ RIP Snapshot Imports
We’re saying goodbye to Snapshot Imports to streamline the MODX Cloud experience and free up resources for more impactful tools like Backstage. If you need to migrate a site, we’ve got you covered:
- How to import from a cPanel server
- How to import via rsync
- How to convert .htaccess redirects to NGINX
Or, just let us handle it for you—we can migrate your site for free or provide a quote for bulk migrations.
🌐 Old Cloud URLs Are Gone for Good
We’ve officially retired the old numbered and account-code URLs (e.g., c0000.paasX.location.modxcloud.com). These have been replaced with modern, HTTPS-ready hashed subdomains (e.g., r1a2n3d4o5.modx.dev). If you were still using those old URLs, they will no longer resolve.
🔑 Best Practices for MODX Cloud Security
Your website is only as secure as your weakest link. Here are four things you should do today to keep your MODX Cloud account locked down:
- Don’t share user accounts—Create separate logins with the least privileges needed.
- Enable 2FA—Two-factor authentication makes it much harder for bad actors to gain access.
- Use SSH Keys—Ditch passwords for secure, key-based logins.
- Rotate passwords when staff leaves**—Easily roll your database and SSH/SFTP credentials if someone leaves.
Stay secure, stay fast, and keep building amazing sites with MODX Cloud. Got questions? We’re here to help! Just open a ticket using the green help button from your MODX Cloud Dashboard or by visiting https://support.modx.com/.
⚠️ Reminder: Usage-Based Billing for Vault Storage and Beyond
As announced in April 2024, we’re moving to usage-based billing for Vault Storage (Backups & Snapshots). This ensures that high-usage customers get the storage they need while keeping costs fair for everyone else.
- Your plan includes a set storage allowance
- Exceeding your limit? You’ll be upgraded to the next tier at renewal
- Annual subscribers may see pro-rated charges monthly
We'll also add this for Local SSD and Network Bandwidth, too. Expect more details as soon as we roll this out.
That’s it for this update! Keep an eye out for even more improvements in the coming weeks and months. 🚀
