Every site and project you host in MODX Cloud is different. That's why we offer multiple PHP versions so you have the optimal functionality for your project. Our hosting platform keeps up with the latest PHP releases, making it easy to choose a version that works perfectly with your website. We're always adding new PHP options, so our customers can keep their sites running smoothly and securely.
Choosing Your PHP Version
You can choose PHP versions when creating a New Cloud or any time from the Cloud edit view. When creating new Clouds we'll pre-select the latest version compatible for your Cloud type. For MODX Revolution Clouds, that will be PHP 8.3 and for new WordPress Clouds, that will be PHP 8.2.
Recommendations for Choosing PHP Versions
When selecting a PHP version for your MODX Cloud hosting, follow these key guidelines:
- Always verify the specific PHP requirements for your Content Management System (CMS)
- Check the compatibility of all plugins, Extras, and custom extensions
- Prioritize using the most recent PHP version that is fully compatible with your website
- Always test your website thoroughly after changing PHP versions to ensure complete functionality and performance
For the most up-to-date information on supported PHP versions, please refer to the official PHP.net supported versions document: PHP Supported Versions. For more information on PHP Versions in MODX Cloud, see Switching or Changing PHP Versions in Clouds.
MODX Revolution (Revo) PHP Compatibility
For MODX Revolution versions 2.7 and above, PHP 8 is supported. The recommended PHP versions for Revo installations:
- PHP 8.3 is preferred for the latest versions of MODX Revolution
- PHP 8.2 can also be used, especially for compatibility with certain Extras (add-ons)
Note: As of Dec 2, 2024, PHP 8.4 is still undergoing testing with the latest MODX Revolution releases. If you run PHP 8.4, we strongly recommend disabling deprecation warnings in your PHP configuration.
WordPress PHP Compatibility
We recommend the following PHP versions for WordPress:
- WordPress 6.2 and earlier: Use PHP 7.4
- WordPress 6.3 to 6.5: Use PHP 8.1
- WordPress 6.6 and above: Use PHP 8.2
- As of Dec 2, 2024, we do not recommend WordPress with PHP 8.3+ as it is still recongnized as only experimental support.
