Starting on February 26, 2025, MODX will allow customers to deploy WordPress Cloud instances through beta access (request WP beta access). Upon the official rollout date, all customers can create WP Cloud instances on any platform, including Gen 2 Private Servers.
This announcement includes the following topics:
What is changing?
WordPress is returning as officially supported software. It will not initially support Snapshots, but restoring a backup into a new Cloud will update the database credentials and hostnames.
You can convert Flex Clouds that have WordPress installed into a proper WP Cloud instance using the “Convert to WordPress” menu option from the gear menu on the Cloud list view or the side menu on the Flex Cloud details page.
Note: production WordPress instances require our Cloud Edge CDN/WAF to enhance security (and speed up sites as a bonus, too). At the time of this announcment, this costs $15/month for the first hostname and $10/month for each additional. For more details on why we require a WAF for production sites see https://modx.com/security. For current pricing see https://modx.com/pricing.
Why is MODX making this change?
WordPress powers ~43% of all websites globally (about 1.2 billion at the time of this announcement). MODX Cloud is a highly tuned PHP platform that works well for WordPress sites. It allows digital agencies and marketing departments to consolidate hosting and offers exclusive workflows for WP sites.
What do I need to do?
You do not need to do anything. You can, however, request WP beta access.
